Tiger trail

Periyar Tiger Reserve has a viable population of around 50 tigers, and, as the name of the trek suggests, the purpose is to spot one of these rare cats. Whereas this remains an unlikely event due to their timid nature, trekkers often see fresh tiger paw prints in the undergrowth, and often close encounters with elephants are experienced. There is also a good chance to see species like Nilgiri languor, giant squirrel, bison, deer and, of course, some of the hundreds of varieties of birds that live in the reserve.

The Tiger Trail, which is an eco development programme arranged by the Forest Department, is a unique way of spending two or three days (1 or two nights) in the deepest parts of Periyar Tiger Reserve. There are two different treks: a one night trek and a two night trek. Both treks begin at 9.30am and continues until 5am when camp is set for the night. The one night trek finishes on the second day at 12 noon. The two night trek finishes on the third day at 12 noon. Usually, 20 to 35km are trekked daily.

The group, a minimum of two and a maximum of five people, is accompanied by armed forest guards, 5 guides and 2 officials with good communication equipment, and geared to face any emergency situation. Tent, vegetarian food, camping gear, sleeping bag, torch light, and mineral water will be provided along with leach socks in the rainy season. Wearing long trousers and shoes or boots suitable for walking is essential. Participants should be in good physical condition, be willing to sacrifice the luxuries and comfort of a hotel and ready to accept the different moods of Nature. However, you will almost certainly get an experience to remember.
