Elephant activities
The Indian elephant is the state animal of Kerala. Periyar Tiger Reserve has thousands of elephants, but in Kerala elephants are also found in temples and as working elephants. Additionally, in the Periyar area there is Elephant Junction; a project that has the purpose of providing tourists with information about elephants and a chance to experience various close encounters with elephants. This is done in a responsible way which is why we recommend this programme. There are three different options:
Elephant ride: A 30 minute elephant safari through coffee, cardamom and pepper plantations.
Elephant ride and elephant bathing or logging: A 30 minute elephant safari through coffee, cardamom and pepper plantations. If you choose the bathing option you get to wash the elephant for 30 minutes. If you choose the logging option you get to see how working elephants do their work, including a demonstration of the special language used by the elephant's trainer.
